Spiritual discipline of fasting focus of UNY Wesleyan Covenant Fast Group
Written: 5/3/2010
Eight people, clergy and lay, in the new Upper New York conference formed a “support group” in Lent 2010 to support one another as they fast (not eat for a 24 hour period) as they support alleviating world hunger.
An invitation is extended to any and all fastors or those who might like to begin the spiritual practice of fasting to come and join this new group. The Rev. Jeff Childs, pastor of the Grand Island Trinity UMC, brought the idea from the Minnesota Annual Conference where he had served for 19 years. A similar group there had raised awareness of the spiritual discipline of fasting and raised over $10,000 to help feed hungry people.
The Wesleyan Covenant Fast Group will support people in the conference who are fasting through prayer support and a monthly e-newsletter. Fastors will be encouraged to give the money saved from meals not eaten to alleviate hunger either locally through their own church or through the World Hunger and Poverty Advance Special of the General Board of Global Ministries which has the goal - “To cut the number of people hurting from hunger and poverty in half by 2015.”
